Sofie Sofie pulled herself up onto the fence, scrabbling a little as her claws slipped on the rain-wet wood. Everything was so much harder when you weighed more. How did humans manage to climb stuff with more weight than this on them? It just didn’t make sense. She paused, panting, to rest on top of the fence, curling her tail over her stomach and glancing around. It was early morning, just past sunrise, and she had picked the word ‘vet’ out of the humans’ senseless conversations the night before. Time to evade and avoid. I can take care of my own kits! She thought protectively to herself. I don’t need a vet to do it for me. I’m fine. They know I’m fine. Why do I still have to go to the vet? Well, it wasn’t like she was planning on it. Besides, she had important plans for that day. She had to tell Asia she was expecting, and her friend’s rambles would surely take up at least half of the day. And of course, she had to tell Mason. She had seen him several times in the past month, of course, but she hadn’t found out she was expecting his kits until recently. Recently meaning her last trip to the vet when one of the humans who worked there had spent extra time feeling her belly and weighing her and talking. That would be enough to tip off any queen. Sofie shook her fur out and leaped down from the fencepost, skittering a little on the slippery concrete before regaining her footing and looking around. No one else was out yet. The night-time cats had probably just slunk back to their allies while most of the housecats were probably sleeping in. Sofie had the road to herself as she walked the familiar path to where Asia lived. As she neared it, she called out, “Asia! You up yet?”

Anastasia Anastasia blinked open her eyes when the sun glared down at her. She groaned and rolled over, covering her eyes with her white paws. Too early... She groaned inwardly. But when she realized what had woken up and she removed a paw off one of her eyes. "Sofie?" She asked, flipped over and standing up, stretching each leg in turn. She spotted her friend and smiled. "Yeah, I'm up now. What's up?" She asked, sitting down and licking a paw so she could clean her ears and her forehead.

Sofie Sofie trotted over, purring. “Morning, sleepyhead. Glad to see you’re awake.” She sat down next to her friend, waiting for the sleep to clear from her eyes. She was slightly apprehensive about telling Asia she was expecting Mason’s kits, but she supposed she didn’t have to explain the whole thing. “I have something to tell you.”

Anastasia Anastasia tilted her head. "What is it?" She asked, her curiosity growing more and more with every second. Where her humans moving? Did Sofie need somewhere to stay. Anastasia looked her friend up and down, but Sofie didn't keep devastated, just maybe kind of nervous. Yes, nervous was definitely it. And a little pudgy, to be honest. "Have you put on weight, Sofie? Not to be rude or anything, but have your humans been feeding you cream? Cause that stuff is so good and---" Anastasia narrowed her eyes and looked at Sofie closer. Wait a minute... Her friend has gained weight, yes, but only in her stomach. Her face and legs were still skinny as usual, which only happened when a cat was... "No way!" Asia's eyes went wide. "You're pregnant?! How can that be? You said you liked my brother! Did you just go and do it with another tom? I thought you weren't like that Sofie?"

Sofie Sofie glanced down at her belly, a little of the nervousness vanishing. “Well, yeah, I am,” she mewed, a little surprised. “I’m kind of amazed you guessed that so fast. I didn’t know until a few days ago.” Here comes the weird part. “And, erm, I didn’t? I mean, I don’t think I’ve really met a lot of toms long enough to even learn their names, much less seen them more than once.” She scuffed her paws in the dirt, staring at the ground. “Uh…” This is going to be hard. “How do I put this?” She licked her lips, like she did when she was nervous, ears flattened. “They’re… um… Mason’s.”

Anastasia Anastasia rolled her eyes. "Please, Sofie. I've seen LOTS of pregnant she-cats roaming around the streets. I've learned to detect a she-cat when they only a week or two pregnant. You like like you're about a two weeks, so you probably just didn't notice. It happens a lot." Anastasia explained, feeling proud of herself for knowing so much about pregnancy. There was a lot you could learn simply by living on the streets. And now here was the juicy part. Asia flicked her ears to listen to Sofie's explanation and was completely shocked to hear that her best friend's kittens had her brother as their sire. "What?!" She gasped. "But Mason always told me he wasn't attracted to anyone! I'd always try to find him a girlfriend and he always said he had no interest! How the hell did this happen? Did you trick him? Was it an accident?" Oh, foolish me. Something like that doesn't happen on accident. She took a deep breath and calmed herself. "Sorry Sof. This is just kinda hard to take. I mean, I just found out you liked him a month ago. You guys have been hanging out more, but I always thought it was just a harmless friendship. So... what are you gonna do now?" She questioned, padding closer to Sofie so she could sit beside her and wrap her tail around her friend's small, but pudgy, form.

Sofie Sofie shot a sideways glance at her friend. “No, I didn’t trick him. You should know me better than that! Maybe I’m just special.” She stuck her tongue out. “And it was a harmless friendship… At least, at first. I’m not really sure what happened.” She turned away, a blush creeping up her cheeks. “Anyways, I’m not really sure what to do.” She shifted on the rough pavement, trying to find a comfortable way to sit without it feeling like her belly was sagging against the ground and pulling her down with it. Finally she just sighed and crouched down to even out the weight so she was more comfortable. “I mean, I guess I have to tell him some time. He might figure it out when he finds out I’m expecting, but I should probably tell him first so that he doesn’t die of shock or something.”

Anastasia Asia nodded. "Yeah, you shouldn't hide it from him. I mean, he has the right to know. They are his kits. I just honestly don't know how he'll react. He's always so quiet." This was even a shock to herself. Her and Sofie were still young! Well sure she's heard of cats having kittens at ages as young as six or seven moons, but that was just crazy! If Sofie had kittens, their fun would be ruined. Forever young would be over with. Her friend would be constantly taking take of squealing scraps of fur.... Anastasia sighed. This was going to be so weird and it was going to take some getting used to. Her best friend and her brother were going to be raising kits together for God's sake! But where was Sofie going to be raising the kits? In her human's house or was she going to move here? And if she stayed with her humans, would Mason go with her? I would lose both of them! She wailed inside her head. "Where are you going to raise the kits?" She blurted out. "I mean, are you going to stay with your humans? What if Mason goes with you... I will never see either of you. You'll always be busy with your kits and I'll just be stuck her with my mother." Asia's bottom lip trembled as she tried to fight back the tears. Her stomach twisted with anguish. I guess I could always move in with Caleb and Oliver... She decided, but she would miss the city way too much.

Sofie Sofie curled her tail over her paws, staring nervously at the ground. “I know, I do need to tell him. Do you know where he is?” She sighed, raising her gaze off of her feet and looking around. She half-hoped to see his familiar snowshoe pelt somewhere in the shadows, but there was no sign of him. When Asia asked where she would raise the kits, Sofie thought she detected a note of worry in her voice. What’s she nervous about? She wondered to herself. Out loud, she mewed, “I’m not sure. I don’t want to raise kits around my house. The human kids would never leave us alone! But… I don’t know where else I could go.” She swallowed nervously, flattening her ears against her head. “This whole thing... I don’t know what to do! I’m going to have to act mature, and motherly, and I’m going to have these kits weighing me down. And I can’t ask Mason to help me. It’s not really his responsibility. It’s mine.” She glanced over at Asia. Her next words were barely above a whisper. “I’m scared.”

Anastasia Anastasia moved closer to Sofie and pressed her fur against her friend's calico pelt. "It's okay Sof. You're not alone, you have me. And I highly doubt Mason is going to let you raise the kittens alone." Asia soothed with a bit of a giggle. "And sure kittens are a lot of work... a lot of work. But I mean, you have people to help you. I could always take them for a night, or Cooper and Dominic could. They're gonna be the uncles anyway, so they're gonna want to be involved." Maybe this wouldn't be so bad... but kittens were still a lot of work for the first few weeks. And when they started walking, it was harder to keep control of them! Sofie was lucky that Asia and Mason had such a big family to help her with kitten-care. "I don't know where Mason is. He likes to spend time alone a lot of the time. Sometimes he just likes the peace and quiet. But he usually comes back in the afternoon. You can wait here with me if you want." Anastasia smiled and nudged Sofie. "Besides, I gotta take care of my nieces and nephews. Even if they aren't born yet!" Asia giggled and stretched, waving her tail in the air and flicking Sofie's nose.

Sofie Sofie leaned against Asia, glad for the support. She was tired and scared and hungry. But she knew she wasn’t alone, and that counted for something, right? “I’m really glad you’re here to help me with this,” she murmured. “I think I’ll need all the support I can get.” Asia’s optimistic words even cheered her up a little, too. But, still… “I’m just worried Mason won’t want the kits,” Sofie told Asia nervously, looking down at her belly. “He doesn’t seem like the type to want kits. What will I do if he decides he doesn’t want to be a father?” Then she took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. “ I guess I should be more optimistic. Maybe I should go find him now.” Her stomach grumbled loudly, and then she added, “I’d also like to get something to eat. I suppose I’m not going back home tonight.”

Anastasia & Mason
Anastasia nodded. "You don't have to. You can stay here for the night, or tomorrow, or even until the kits are born. There's lots of room in the city you know. And Mason would never walk away from you. He isn't like that." She put her nose in the air and sniffed. It was much earlier than she would have liked, but oh well. No use trying to sleep now. The scents of freshly baked bread and cakes filled the air and Asia licked her lips. "Follow me, Sof. I'll get us something to eat!" Anastasia walked over to the bakery like she did most days. She meowed and pawed at the back door and she listened to the fumbling noises and loud footsteps of the humans inside. But then the plump woman opened up the door and made kind cooing noises at her. Then she spotted Sofie and disappeared back into the bakery and returned moments later with two saucers of thick cream and pieces of warm bread and mince meat. Asia purred and rubbed against the woman's legs while the humans stroked her back before going back into the building. Asia sniffed the bowl of cream and took a few licks, wiping her tongue across her maw and smiling at Sofie. "Bon appetit." She purred.
She took more licks of her cream before she felt a tail touch her side. She turned around and spotted Mason. Quickly swallowing her cream, she smiled and rubbed against her brother. "Hey Mas! We were wondering where you were. Hungry?" Mason shook his head and sat down next to the two girls. He looked over at Sofie and smiled a warm, genuine smile, but he didn't speak.

Sofie Obligingly, Sofie rose to her paws and followed Anastasia to the back door of one of the restaurants. She stood a little back, watching as her friend pawed at the door, then stepped back as a woman emerged. The woman glanced around, then went back inside, coming back with two plates. Sofie sniffed, catching the smell of cream, bread and meat. Thank goodness. She was starving! The human stooped down to stroke Asia on the back, then went inside. Sofie trotted forward, sniffing the plate that didn’t have Anastasia’s face already in it, and then cautiously licked up a little of the bread. She’d never actually had bread before, but this was warm and sweet and soft. She found herself eating a little ravenously, though still being careful to keep her whiskers clean. She might be moving to the streets now, but that didn’t mean she had to abandon all of the manners her mother taught her. Sofie quickly finished the last of the cream, licking the last of it off of the plate and sitting up. Only then did she realize Mason had appeared—he was good at sneaking up on her, and since he hadn’t said anything, she hadn’t even known he was there. Both happy and nervous to see him, Sofie straightened up a little, curling her claws into the concrete but forcing herself to act normal. “Hi, Mason!”

Anastasia & Mason
Mason watched Sofie finished eating, looking closely at her. The last time he had seen her things had gone a little... too far. He didn't really know what had started it. She smelled so good, and she was coming onto him. His instincts kind of took over, and right now he kind of regretted it. What if it gave her the wrong message? Ugh, everything was messed up now. Mason only wanted to be friends, that was the only thing he was capable of doing. He couldn't give Sofie the relationship she wanted. The kind she deserved. "H-hey Sofie..." He meowed, then cleared his throat and glanced sideways before looking at her again. "Um.. how are, how are you?" That was the lamest questions ever. Small talk was torture.
Asia looked between Mason and Sofie. The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. Obviously that last time they had seen each other was the night Sofie conceived, and now things were just.. awkward! Sofie just needed to come out with it. Then maybe things would be better. She nudged Sofie and gave her a look. She didn't want to say anything out loud, since it really was Sofie's place to tell Mason and not hers, but man, this was going to be hard to keep secret if Sofie kept putting it off!

Sofie Sofie swallowed, suddenly three times as nervous as before. The meal she had just eaten churned in her stomach, making her feel nauseous, and her claws were pressing against the ground so hard that she could feel them cracking. When Asia nudged her encouragingly, she nearly fell over. She barely caught herself, stumbling sideways with a squeak as she felt a few of her claws splinter and break. Frantically, she scrabbled back up and then glanced between Asia and Mason. Anastasia looked kind and supportive, and Mason looked slightly guilty. She had to tell him, she knew she did. Finally, she steeled her nerves enough to form the words, though she stared at the ground the whole time. “Mason… I, uh, have to tell you something.” The words were barely audible, but he’d surely gotten used to it by now. She knew he could hear her, even as quiet as she was. “I, um, I’m expecting kits.”
