Caleb
Well, it had been several days since Asia and her friend went home. The barn now seemed strangely empty with their two bodies missing. Sure, Caleb missed his sister a lot, but really, he wished Gracie had decided to stay longer. She was fun and had a sense of humor and God... oh God was she pretty. Caleb had seen a few she-cats since they left, but none compared to Gracie's beauty with her pale spotted pelt and those bright blue eyes. Her voice was so sweet and lyrical, at least to him, and he loved to hear her talk. How he wished she was here now. A man in love? You could say that. He was always the kind of guy who believed in love at first sight and once he found someone, that was it. He was starstruck. But he also had his doubts, his fears, his opinions... city cats could be highstrung. She might have someone else. But more importantly, he was afraid that 'someone else' was his brother, Oliver. Anyone could see the connection he made with Gracie when they were together. Caleb liked to think he made a connection with her as well, but what if the one with Olly was stronger? Was it a love connection? Or simply a friend connection? Did they simple connect on different levels while her heart was still open to someone else? Caleb didn't like to think about it that much because it made him jealous, and he hated being jealous. Especially of his own family.
Caleb simply loved laying down and thinking about Gracie, and that was what he was doing now. Laying on his back with her paws tucked against his chest, remembering how it looked when the sun reflected off her coat, turning her fur into pale gold. Stunning. He let out a sigh, closing his eyes and rolling over. Others have probably realized how stunning she is. Someone else might have already made their move. The thought of it twisted Caleb's stomach. He couldn't lose her, not when they had just met. No, it was now his goal to become her mate. She said she wanted to live in the country, so hopefully she would return soon. And then we would snatch her up, sweep her off her paws, before anyone else could get to her.

Oliver sighed as he slipped into the barn, a mouthful of herbs and leaves in his mouth. The weather was swiftly cooling, and soon plants would be dying off, so he wanted to stash up on herbs while he could, especially since cats would be getting sick more often with the cold. He knew there would soon be many country and even wilderness cats coming for a plant that could help their stuffed nose or sore throat, and Oliver didn't want to be left unprepared. He glanced over at his brother, rolling his eyes as he shifted to drop his mouthful of plants beside a bale of hay. He needed to sort them out, but that could wait.
"Have you even moved today, Caleb?" he then softly teased his brother, a small smile appearing on his face. The barn was quieter now that Asia and Gracie had left, the excitement of their visit just a recent memory now. Everything was back to normal now, though the two she-cats had promised to visit again soon, Gracie seeming especially excited about returning to the country. Well, at least everything was almost back to normal. Caleb didn't quite stay his usual carefree self, simply laying around the barn all day instead of working to prepare for winter, which would be there soon. Oliver then paused beside his brother, looking down at the other with concern. "You're feeling okay, aren't you?" he then inquired, "I don't want you to go off and die from some city disease. Sweet as Gracie was, she might have brought something with her..." he trailed off with a frown, tail flicking thoughtfully. Caleb only started acting all mopey once Asia and Gracie left, so it had to be something to do with them. Or else his brother was just being a drama queen without more cats to roughhouse with, which Oliver figured was just as likely.

Caleb
Caleb looked over at his brother, flicking his ear. He said Gracie was sweet... how sweet did he think she was? Her narrowed his eyes and rolled over onto his belly. "I'm feeling fine." He said, a little snippier than he meant to. "Gracie isn't disease-ridden, so you don't need to worry about me." Then he caught himself, adding quickly "And Asia isn't either." Oliver was always more over-bearing and worrisome when winter was coming, but he should not be going around accusing their little sister of carrying disease... or her pretty friend. Pretty cats didn't carry diseases anyway. Only love bugs... Caleb cleared his throat and stood up, shaking his coat. "Do you need me to do anything?" He asked, even though his tone was anything but helpful. It sounded more forced, since he really had no desire to help. Herb collecting was the most boring and tedious chore ever. But he couldn't just lie around, no matter how much he wanted to. It would get boring eventually, after all, and he already had the urge to stretch his legs.

Oliver felt his ears flatten a bit, immediately picking up on the irritation in his brother's voice. Had he said something wrong? He frowned for a moment, stepping back a bit when Caleb rolled onto his stomach before listening to his next words. "Ah...I never said she was." he then said uncertainly, "But she could still carry something...the city really is a gross place.." he trailed off uncertainly, falling silent as he watched his brother. Why had the other taken so much offense to his words? They were true, and Oliver just didn't want his brother to catch some illness that he didn't know how to cure. He hesitated again as Caleb spoke again, unsure if he should actually ask the obviously bitter tom to help. "Ah..." He paused before rolling his eyes and turning away, having an unusual burst of frustration. "You don't have to help, Caleb." he then meowed, and while his voice stayed calm and soft, he didn't bother to hide his own irritation, "I'll just find herbs, and spread hay, and widen the entrance on my own." Wrong. He would definitely need help moving hay to help warm the barn from where the humans had stuffed it away, and widening the the hole they used as an entrance would be exhausting on his own. But as much as he loved his brother, if he was going to act like a little kit not getting his way, then Oliver didn't even want to deal with him.

Caleb
"Arghhh fine." Caleb got up and stalked over to a bail of hay. He stretched his arms up and gripped it with his claws, pulling pawfuls of straw out and strewing it all over the floor. He kept going until there was hay all around him, then he started kicking it with his hind legs. He didn't know exactly how Oliver wanted the hay... so he just kept continuing to pull hay out of the bales until there were piles all over the place. Maybe he needed it for insulation? So Caleb started to push some toward the edges of the barn, hoping maybe this would block out some of the cold. But looking around, he had really pulled out too much hay... it was everywhere now and the barn was now covered in a thick carpet. Oops. "Is that good enough for you?" He said to Olly. He hadn't been paying attention to his brother while he was "working". Caleb knew he was being difficult and quite rude, but he really couldn't help it. He was just feeling really ornery. He didn't know how this was gonna help himself when it came to Gracie. He was just frustrated and his brother was the only cat he could lash out at.

Oliver's ears flattened against his head as he watched Caleb, confusion and frustration mixed in his eyes. What in the world was wrong with his brother? Oliver couldn't think of anything that would put Caleb in such a sour mood. They had just spent a great time with Gracie and Asia, right? Why would his brother be so irritable after that? The patched tom let out a faint sigh, frowning just a bit at the mess the other cat had made. He would have to clean it up a bit later, since that was thankfully a job he could do on his own. "It's fine." he muttered in return, not wanting to snap at his brother and just start an argument.
He was silent for a moment before shaking his head, "Caleb, what's going on?" he then meowed, determined to find out what was bothering his brother. He had a right to worry, didn't he? "And don't you dare try to say you're feeling fine, 'cause you've been acting like a grumpy kit for a while now." More so than he usually did, at least. And while Oliver didn't want to seem like some overbearing brother, Caleb at been distant for days, and when the other tom was his only company, it became kind of lonely. Especially when he didn't even know why.

Caleb
Caleb really did feel bad about acting like a total ass to his brother. He sighed and looked over at Oliver. "Sorry Olly. I've just been feeling a bit... off." He should probably tell his brother what was going on, given the fact they lived together and he couldn't keep a secret from his brother for long. Keeping a secret always make him a bit more... agitated. But this secret from different... it was about his feelings. Feelings he was pretty sure he shared with Oliver. Well, there was only one way to find out. "Gracie is really pretty isn't she?" He inquired, leaning forward. He was curious to hear what Olly's response would be. If he agreed, it just made the chances higher than he also had feeling for Gracie. Caleb wasn't sure how he would react to that.

Oliver frowned a bit at his brother, wishing he knew what was making his brother feel off. Oh well. Caleb usually told him everything, so surely this secret would come out eventually, too. The patched tom blinked with surprise at the sudden question. Gracie? Why in the world were they suddenly talking about her? "You really are feeling off, aren't you?" he murmured with amusement, smiling at his brother's sudden topic change before shrugging.
"But yeah, she really is. I'd be lying if I said she wasn't. It was nice to have her around. Gave me a relief from looking at you." His smile grew at the memory of Gracie and Asia's visit. The two really had brought a bit of life to the place. Oliver then paused, eyes shifting thoughtfully over to Caleb. Was this about Gracie? Could Caleb like her? Well why wouldn't' he just say something like that? "Why?" he then asked carefully, though he kept the small smile on his face.

Caleb
Caleb shrugged, trying to keep his irritation from showing. But Olly admitted he thought Gracie was pretty... so he could possibly like her. Jesus, why was he being so paranoid?! Or... jealous. Or whatever. Was it because he was so... pocessive over Gracie, or maybe he was just scared of something messing with his relationship with his brother. He honestly didn't know. All he knew was he was growing more and more upset. "You ever hear about the guy code? Or, I guess the bro code in our case." Caleb asked, trying to sound as nonchalant at possible. "You know... no going after another's cat's mate, or ex mate. Figuring out what to do if, let's see, for some case... two guys both like the same... girl." Caleb began plucking at some straw between his paws, feeling the fur raise on his neck. He looked over at Oliver, his eyes intense.

Oliver paused as he listened to his brother, frowning faintly as he tried to figure out what the heck Caleb was going on about. Guy code? What in the world did that have to do with anything? The patched tom frowned a bit, quickly noting the tense appearance his brother had taken on while he spoke. What was he getting so worked up about? A flicker of understanding passed through Oliver's eyes at Caleb's last few words. Like the same girl? "Oh!" he then meowed with surprise, "You like Gracie?" But this wasn't a brother-to-brother confession...Caleb had something else on his mind. Did he think Oliver liked her too? Olly paused for a moment, thinking about this. Gracie was sweet, absolutely adorable and he was more than relieved that Anastasia brought her to the country, but he didn't feel the same way that Caleb obviously felt. He had to clear this up before it got worse. "Oh." he meowed again and a faint smile, voice soft as he hoped Caleb would let him explain, "Well I like her too," he then began again, "But not in that way. So don't worry."

Caleb
Oh, so Oliver didn't like her... well that changed things a bit. Caleb looked his brother up and down. He didn't have to worry about Olly stealing his girl, but he still wasn't happy. Was there a reason why he didn't like Gracie? Did Olly think there was something wrong with her? "Well... why not?! What, is she not good enough for us?" His fur began to rise. "You're not good enough for her, that's what it is!" When Caleb got into these moods, all someone could do was wait it out. He never got set off easier, it was something that took a lot of time to do. But Caleb had also never really liked a girl, and the stress of having her so far away and out of reach, was making him inconsolable and irritable. And unfortunately, Olly was in his path of destruction.

Oliver jerked with alarm when his words didn't seem to calm Caleb down, and instead the tom found something else to snap at him about. Why was he so concerned with this?! Oliver's ears flattened against his head, feeling his patience dwindling down. He didn't like Gracie...he didn't like anyone!! No matter how many girls the two brothers had seen in the country, Oliver had never been attracted to any of them. But then, when there had been a large black tom that was roaming near their barn, Olly hadn't been able to take his eyes away. He had managed to ignore this problem for a while, but now it was as if Caleb was rubbing it in his face! "I don't like her!!" he then snapped back, his temper breaking for the first time in quite a while, "I can't like her! I don't like she-cats!" And then it was out, the first time Oliver had ever admitted it to himself or anyone else, and he froze, almost forgetting to breath for a moment before he shook his head, "I-...I mean...I don't..." But his mind drew a blank, unable to think of anything to say to take the words back or change their meaning, and he could only stare helplessly at his brother while waiting for the other's reaction.

Caleb
Caleb stared at Oliver, letting the words register in his head. What did he mean by 'I don't like she-cats'? What did that mean he liked then? Was he asexual, like Mason? Was he incapable of loving or liking anything in a romantic sense? No, Oliver wasn't that kind of cat. Caleb had seen the looks he had given certain cats, a sort of longing. But looking back, Caleb couldn't remember once seeing Oliver look at a girl in that way, or even talk about a girl that wasn't Anastasia. All the cats Oliver had looked at, looked at in that special way, had been toms.
Finally, it clicked. He mouth fell slightly agape. It wasn't that he was angry, but a little stunned. "Oliver... are you trying to tell me you're..." Caleb took a step closer so their whiskers were brushing. "...gay?" He tilted his head, looking his brother up and down. He didn't look any different than any other cat. There was nothing that screamed homosexuality. But still, how had Caleb never realized before? Was he really that oblivious, or had his brother just been hiding it this whole time? "Were you afraid I wouldn't accept you? Is that why you never told me?" Caleb hoped that wasn't the case, cause no matter what his brother was interested in, he'd always love him. Well, besides Gracie. But obviously the pretty she-cat was out of Caleb's mind at this point.

Oliver hesitated, eyes shifting downwards to avoid his brotehr's gaze. Gay. Was he gay? He had just practically admitted it, right? And it was true. He didn't like she-cats. He'd never felt attracted towards females, but he'd just ignored this his whole life, deciding he was just different and there was nothing he could do about it. But it was true, he wasn't like Mason, who didn't like anyone. He had felt his heart stir for others, but when he realized these others were only toms, he quickly chose to shove those feelings away, living life as if he was just a single tom who chose not to take a mate. And that was all fine for a while. Caleb didn't have anyone either, but then Gracie came and stole his heart, and now this ugly truth was left in the air.
Oliver remained silent for a moment, trying to sort out all these thoughts before his ears pricked at Caleb's last questions, and his eyes shot up with surprise. "No!" he blurted. He would never keep something so big from his brother. "I just...I didn't know. I wasn't sure if it was true." He hesitated here before shrugging a bit, "I didn't want it to be true. So-...so I ignored it. Maybe I was just crazy or something, right? And someday everything would be normal. It would all snap into place, and I'd be normal like you." He laughed weakly here, feeling so weak and foolish as he shifted uncomfortably while his eyes once again moved away from his brother. Oh, what if Caleb didn't accept him? Kicked him out of the barn? Oliver's ears flattened against his skull, feeling a bit of panic bubble in his chest.

Caleb
Caleb gave Oliver a warm gaze. "Olly, no one is normal." He headbutted his brother's shoulder, flicking his ear with his tail. "And there's no way in hell I'm normal. You're just... a different kind of normal. I mean, look at Mason. He likes no one. If anything, he's the one that isn't normal!" Caleb chuckled. How had he never noticed this? Now, it was like looking at Oliver and seeing a whole other cat. Not in a bad way, it was just like he was looking at the real Oliver. Something had always seemed off, and now Caleb knew why. "Oliver, we've always been closer than with our other brothers. I'm happy for you, that you finally admitted this not only to me, but to yourself. And I'm so sorry for how I was acting earlier..." He flattened his ears and sat down, bowing his head a little. "I'm just a jealous stupid fur-ball." He laughed a bit at himself, looking up at his patched brother with a smile. "I'm sorry. Now how about we get down to business and start getting this barn ready for winter, hm?" He had done a half-assed job with a hay, and it was about time he straightened it out.
